Obesity is an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a health risk. It increases morbidity and mortality in the Black community at a greater rate that in the rest of society.
Unfortunately, most people only have access to their body mass index (BMI), which is an outdated way of measuring risk and managing weight.
While fitness and medical professionals have known this for years, access to gold-standard equipment is usually reserved for high-level athletes or comes with a big price tag. While healthcare is complex, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to health, there is something we can do. We can start by leveraging technology to give Black Americans access to their own data so they can make decisions to positively affect their health and wellness.
This all starts with having access to technology that gives data, professionals to help interpret data, and then a system for accountability and support.
